FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup qualifier: Black Princesses fight back to beat Uganda
The Ghana women's national under-20 football team staged a spirited comeback to defeat Uganda women's national under-20 football team 2-1 in the first leg of their FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup qualification tie at the Accra Sports Stadium last Sunday.
Uganda stunned the home side by taking the lead in the 32nd minute, briefly silencing the crowd and putting Ghana under early pressure. The visitors maintained their advantage heading into the break, leaving the Black Princesses with work to do in the second half.
Ghana, however, returned from the interval with renewed determination and intensity. Their persistence paid off in the 58th minute when substitute Priscilla Mensah rose highest to head home the equaliser, sparking renewed belief among the home supporters.
The hosts continued to press for a second goal but were repeatedly frustrated by Uganda’s goalkeeper, who delivered an impressive performance with a series of crucial saves to keep her side in contention.
The decisive moment eventually arrived in the 85th minute. Latifa Abesik calmly finished off a well-worked attacking move after receiving a precise pass from Jessica Appiah on the flank, sealing the comeback victory for Ghana.
Mensah nearly extended the lead in the closing stages but was denied twice by the woodwork in quick succession.
The 2-1 win gives the Black Princesses a slender but valuable advantage ahead of the return leg in Uganda, as they aim to secure qualification for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
