Former minister organises football tourney for Nhyiaeso

The former Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong, has organised the Nhyiaeso community football tournament as part of measures to revive football in the area, groom talents and eventually have a team to qualify to play premiership football.

As a first step, he has sponsored the community football matches, given each of the seven teams a set of football jerseys and presented footballs for the tournament, cash prizes and trophy and a set of jersey for the winning team.

Mr Sarpong, who is also the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary aspirant for Nhyiaeso, said he had spotted a lot of football talents in the area and the best he could do was to approach all the assembly members and ask them to present their teams.

He told the Daily Graphic he was satisfied with the skills of players from the various teams that were presented.

Mr Sarpong, who is currently the chief executive of the State Housing Company, also presented over 100 street light bulbs to assembly members to light up the community.

Mr Sarpong insisted the move was purely non-partisan because he knew that if he mixed it with political party issues, the cause would be defeated and the talents would be lost.

He explained that he decided to stay off politics as a means to unite the community.

An amount of GH¢15,000 was spent on the entire tournament and street light bulbs.
