GH₵5,000 up for grabs in 2023 African Games logo/mascot contest

The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) in collaboration with the Ghana 2023 Project Team has launched a search for a mascot and logo for the 13th African Games which will be held in Ghana.

The MOYS says it is looking for a logo and a mascot that uses "parts of our heritage, our traditional/cultural symbols and flora, as well as fauna to epitomise our collective dreams and aspirations as a people, first as Ghanaians (HOST NATION) and then as Africans".

The submission deadline for the contest is Wednesday, July 29, 2020, and the winner will be announced before the official launch of the 13th African Games, Ghana 2023 later in the year.

"The Logo and Mascot should also represent the African Union (AU) and the African Union Commission (AUC) Images. They should both be easily recognisable and colourful as entries will be judged for the style, creativity and impact, easily usable for all promotions and advertising".

Prizes

Winners of either logo or mascot submission shall receive GH₵5,000.00 cash and plaque each

The first runner-up and second runner-up will receive GH₵3,000 and GH₵2,000 each.

Eligibility

The competition is open to Ghanaians, who will be expected to indicate their full name, proof of identity such as national ID (Ghana Card) or passport, and email addresses, as well as phone numbers.

The entries should be accompanied by a short description of not more than 300 words of designer's own interpretation of either logo and/or mascot.

All entries must be submitted in both electronic formats, as well as hard copies at Corporate Box 4, Accra Sports Stadium.

2023 African Games unaffected by COVID-19

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Isaac Kwame Asiamah at a recent press briefing said the Coronavirus pandemic had not affected Ghana's preparations towards organising the games.

He said: "Notwithstanding the negative effect of COVID-19 on the global sporting programmes, I am happy to announce that, Ghana’s preparation to host and organise the 2023 African Games is on course. So far, there has not been any indication of the postponement of the games. Nonetheless, the 2023 African Games Project Team, led by my hard-working and industrious Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that Ghana organises and hosts a memorable African Games, come 2023".

Background

The Executive Council of the African Union endorsed the offer of the Republic of Ghana to host the 13th African Games 2023.

The Ghana 2023 Games will involve 20 plus sporting disciplines, 50 plus participating nations and 7,000 plus athletes/technical persons and 2 co-host cities - Accra & Kumasi.
