New dawn for Black Queens: Björkegren takes charge

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed Kim Lars Björkegren as the head coach of the Black Queens, ushering in a new chapter for the senior women’s national team in line with the FA’s determination to restore Ghana’s dominance in women’s football after years of decline.

Accompanying the Swede is a restructured technical team aimed at injecting fresh ideas and energy into the Black Queens. Charles Sampson, recently named coach of the Black Princesses, steps in as an assistant coach, alongside Anita Wiredu-Mintah, who also brings experience from her tenure with the Princesses.

Björkegren replaces Swiss Coach Nora Häuptle, who stepped down at the end of her contract on December 31, 2024. Häuptle, credited with stabilising the team during a challenging period, leaves behind a foundation that her successor will look to build on.

In a statement, the GFA expressed confidence in the Swedish tactician’s ability to lead the national team to success.

Revamped team

Other key appointments include Nassamu Yakubu as the Goalkeepers’ Coach and Enoch Jordan Daitey as the Athletic Coach. Dr Kate Boachie-Agyemang leads the medical team, which is supported by team nurse, Asinawu Abubakari, and Physiotherapist, Margaret Foli.

Added to the backroom staff are former Black Queens captain, Adwoa Bayor, and Patience Nana Quarshie, who take up roles as Equipment Officers, while Swedish Video Analyst, Ronnie Bergdahl, will provide technical insights to the team. Drucilia Arthur has been named Welfare Manager to ensure the players’ off-pitch well-being.

Björkegren brings a wealth of experience to the Queens. He seamlessly transitioned from coaching men’s teams in 2015 to becoming a recognised figure in women’s football, quickly making his mark on the international stage.

The Swede has managed top sides globally, including Racing Louisville FC in the US, National Women’s Soccer League, Cyprus champions Apollon Ladies FC, Sweden’s Linköpings FC, and Beijing BG Phoenix FC in the Chinese Women’s Super League.

Key tasks

His immediate challenge is to prepare the Black Queens for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco this July.

The tournament will serve as a critical platform for Ghana to reassert itself as a force in African football and secure qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
