2024 GUSA Games: UG wins gold in men’s hockey, UCC dominates basketball

The University of Ghana (UG) secured gold in the men’s hockey tournament after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) at the 2024 Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games in Cape Coast.

The final match, held at the University of Cape Coast Sports Complex, saw UG emerge victorious in the all-play-all tournament format, defeating KNUST to claim the top spot.

UG's impressive journey to the gold included a penalty shootout win over the University of Cape Coast (UCC), a dominant 3-0 victory over the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), and a final 1-0 win over KNUST, finishing with 8 points. UCC secured second place with 7 points.

In men's basketball, UCC’s Wildcats showcased their dominance, emerging as overall champions after impressive performances that saw them fend off strong challenges from UG and KNUST.

In the men's goalball competition, UG claimed another victory, thanks to the exceptional performance of Emmanuel Dela Mensah, widely regarded as Ghana’s best Goalball player. His skillful throwing secured him the title of tournament top scorer.

UG also shone in the athletics events, with Bazaa Kurug Morries winning the 800 meters race with a time of 1:50.5. 

Additionally, Seidu Salifu from UG triumphed in the men’s 10,000 meters event, clocking an impressive 31:14.47 to claim first place.

In the men’s hurdles final, Eric Annobil from the University of Development Studies, Tamale (UDS), claimed gold with an impressive time of 14.60 seconds.

In tennis, Tracy Ampah of KNUST clinched gold in the women’s singles category, while her opponent, Lawrencia Aghoghorbia from the University of Ghana (UG), secured the silver after a closely contested match.

Several athletes have set new records and broken old ones, while others have successfully defended their titles and earned medals.

Throughout the competition, participants have demonstrated outstanding skill and determination, striving for victory and honor for their respective institutions.

The 2024 GUSA Games, themed “Repositioning University Sports for National Development,” has made history with its first-ever indoor and night-time opening ceremony, adding a unique flair to the event.

The Games, which began on Friday, January 3, will conclude on Saturday, January 18, 2025.
