Ghana’s first Boxing World Champion D K Poison named PKO Director, expresses gratitude to Foundation
Ghana’s first-ever boxing world champion, D.K. Poison, has been appointed as a Non-Executive Director at PKO, marking a significant step in recognising and reintegrating one of the nation’s most celebrated sporting icons into leadership within the sport.
The appointment forms part of PKO’s broader vision to honour and support legends who helped build Ghana’s global reputation in boxing. D.K. Poison, who made history with his world title triumph, is expected to inspire the next generation of fighters and contribute to the sport’s development.
In response, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to the PKO Foundation for its continued support during a critical period of his life.
Earlier this year, the Foundation honoured him through its Restoring Legends Hope campaign—an initiative aimed at recognising and supporting former sports heroes who have significantly contributed to Ghana’s sporting success.
Beyond the recognition, PKO has provided comprehensive care, including covering his medical needs and offering a monthly stipend to ensure his well-being.
The gesture has been widely praised as a model for how sporting institutions can support retired athletes. Speaking on the initiative, D.K. Poison highlighted the challenges many former athletes face after retirement and stressed the importance of such interventions.
His appointment, along with the Foundation’s support, reflects PKO’s renewed commitment not only to promoting boxing but also to preserving its legacy by caring for those who built it.
