Ghana's upcoming friendlies with Austria, Germany: Newcomers face defining World Cup tests

Ghana’s road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is entering a decisive phase, with this week’s high-profile friendlies against Austria and Germany shaping up as a crucial audition for the Black Stars’ fringe players — and a final polishing ground for the established core.

With less than three months to kick off in North America, head coach Otto Addo has assembled a 26-man squad that largely reflects the spine expected to feature at the Mundial, barring the injured Mohammed Kudus, who remains in a race against time to be fit for the June 11–July 19 tournament.

The team opened camp in Vienna last Sunday, with most of the Europe-based contingent reporting ahead of Friday’s clash with Austria before travelling to Stuttgart to face Germany three days later.

Debutants

While the core of the squad appears settled, the spotlight firmly shifts to four debutants handed a rare and potentially career-defining opportunity to force their way into Ghana’s final World Cup plans.

Auxerre right-back Marvin Senaya, Pafos FC defender Derrick Luckassen, Darmstadt centre-back Patrick Pfeiffer and Kocaelispor striker Daniel Agyei all arrive in camp with everything to prove — and little margin for error.

For them, these two fixtures are more than friendlies; they are high-stakes trials that could either fast-track their World Cup dreams or end them before they truly begin.

History offers both inspiration and warning. Kevin-Prince Boateng famously made a late switch to Ghana ahead of the 2010 World Cup and went on to play a pivotal role in the Black Stars’ run to the quarter-finals.

More recently, Antoine Semenyo, Inaki Williams and Tariq Lamptey seized similar late opportunities ahead of Qatar 2022 to cement their places.

Now, a similar pathway beckons for those who impress Coach Otto Addo.

Senaya arguably finds himself in the most open race. Ghana’s right-back position has lacked a consistent occupant in recent times, with Tariq Lamptey struggling for fitness and Alidu Seidu falling out of favour after underwhelming displays in last year’s qualifiers.

The Auxerre defender, who previously turned down a call-up from Togo, now has a golden opportunity to claim the role outright.

Absentees

At centre-back, the absence of Monaco’s Mohammed Salisu has left a noticeable void, presenting Luckassen and Pfeiffer with a clear route into contention. Both will compete with established options such as Alexander Djiku, Jerome Opoku, Derrick Köhn and emerging talent Jonas Adjetey for a place in Addo’s plans.

Luckassen arrives with a wealth of experience across Europe, having featured for clubs including PSV, Hertha Berlin and Anderlecht, while Pfeiffer — a German youth international turned Ghanaian — has been a consistent performer for Darmstadt this season.

In an attack, however, the challenge is steeper. Agyei must break into a competitive frontline led by captain Jordan Ayew, Inaki Williams and the in-form Antoine Semenyo. Despite a modest return of four goals in 24 league games for Kocaelispor, the 28-year-old now faces the biggest test of his career.

With only two additional friendlies against Mexico and Wales scheduled for May before Ghana open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, the window for late inclusion is rapidly closing.
