Golf Open 2015 slated for saturday

Airtel Ghana has been named title sponsor of this year's prestigious Ghana Golf Open 2015 being organised by the Ghana Golf Association.

The three day championship is powered by Airtel Business, the business oriented sub brand of Airtel Ghana which is leading the drive in Ghana to provide next generation business communications solutions to enterprises - small, medium and large.

The event, the flagship golf championship on the Ghanaian golf calendar comes off at the newly refurbished Achimota Golf Club, from Saturday 19th - Monday 21st September, 2015 under the distinguished patronage of Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin II as the special guest of honour.

The Championship will showcase Ghanaian talents, pitted against the best from the Sub region - Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone and Gambia.

The National Director of Golf for Ghana and prolific PGA Golf professional Mr Steven Wilson expressed his excitement and expectation for the championship.

He said it couldn't be more pleased to welcome Airtel Ghana as a sponsor of the Ghana Golf Open and look forward to many more years of this partnership culminating into successful championship events.

Director of Airtel Business, Mr Maxwell Dodd, said, it has over the years been consistent in contributing to sports in Ghana through its grassroots football development program -Airtel Rising Stars and in recent times headline sponsor for the Accra Millennium Marathon.

He said this role as headline sponsor of the Golf Open will not only add to its portfolio of sports commitments but will give it the opportunity to extend the benefits of Airtel Business to executives from different sectors of the economy.

Mr Dodd also noted that, it is confident Airtel Business will find the Ghana Golf Open to be an extremely effective and valuable marketing and business-to-business platform.

This year's Golf tournament seeks to nurture talent and assemble the nucleus of the National Golf Team for continental and world stage championships and is open to both Lady and Men Golfers.

Since the inception of the championship, early winners have been mainly expatriates, with the first Ghanaian winner being Sam Appiah of Kumasi in 1963 followed by David Abaloo of Achimota in 1971 and subsequently Ghanaians began to win in successive years such as Joe Dey, David Abaloo, Walter Degbe, Charles Quarshie, Victor Brave Mensah, Amos Koblah, George Osei, Vincent Torgah and Kojo Bannieh.

Notable Lady Winners have been Bessy Hahermacher, who entered from Kenya, Mona Myers-Lamptey (nee Captan), Grace Afriyie and Felicity Okyei Gyeabour.
