Hearts go gay

Accra Hearts of Oak fans yesterday went wild with jubiliation into the night as they handed visiting New Edubiase a 1-0 defeat at the Accra Sports Stadium to open their Premier League campaign this season.

But the Phobians had to rely on striker Sam Yeboah's late goal to burst the bubble of a stubborn  Edubiase side to carry the day before a huge crowd.

Yeboah's goal unsettled the visitors, who employed delayed tactics in a bid to hold the Phobians until Yoboah’s 78th minute strike from Robin Gnagne’s header dashed their hopes.

Edubiase were forced to defend their lines from the outset as skilful Samudeen Ibrahim gave fans a lot to cheer about with his deft touches with Mustapha Essuman  taking charge of the midfield of the homesters.

The about 15,000 spectators in the stands demanded for goals as Hearts piled pressure on Edubiase with Samudeen's volley outside the box missing the target narrowly in the 12th minute.

Edubiase replied swiftly six minutes later forcing a superb save from Hearts' goalie Abdulai Soulama of  a beautiful freekick from James Boadu outside the box.

Eric Kumi missed a fine opportunity after a defensive blunder by Edubiase before Tahiru Malik’s free header from a corner kick missed the target.

Hearts maintained the pressure in the second half and Thomas Abbey watched in awe as his header hit the woodwork after he was set up by Sam Yeboah. Yeboah was later put through by Gnagne in the 78th minute when he slotted the ball past Benjamin Mensah in post for Edubiase.
