Jackson leads Team Ghana at 2025 World Swimming Championships

Ghana’s swimming sensation Abeku Jackson will once again carry the nation’s hopes on his shoulders as he spearheads a four-member team to the 2025 World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Singapore, scheduled from July 27 to August 3.

Jackson, 25, a veteran of multiple international meets and Ghana’s undisputed No.1 swimmer, is set to compete in the 50m and 100m butterfly, as well as the 4x100m mixed freestyle and mixed medley relays.

A regular face on the international circuit, Jackson remains Ghana’s top medal hopeful as he seeks to lower his personal best and make a bigger splash on the global stage.

He will be joined by US-based Harry Stacey, Paris 2024 Olympian Joselle Mensah and UK-based Nubia Adjei, a formidable quartet poised to make a big splash representing Ghana.

Stacey, fresh off his Olympic debut in Paris and a standout performance at last year’s Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships in Accra — where he was adjudged Best Swimmer — will compete in the same events as Jackson, bringing depth and promise to the men’s campaign.

In the women’s events, Joselle will headline Ghana’s challenge in the 50m and 100m freestyle, while Adjei is entered in the 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke.

Together, the four swimmers will team up for the mixed 4x100m freestyle and medley relays, offering an exciting blend of experience, power and youthful exuberance.

Team Ghana will be led by Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) President Delphina Quaye and the General Secretary, Mohammed Muniru Kassim, with Jackson travelling from Accra on July 23, while the remaining athletes are expected to fly in from their various foreign training bases.

While podium finishes may be a long shot in such a fiercely competitive field, the focus for Team Ghana is clear: achieve personal bests, gain experience and prepare for stronger performances at future international meets, including the Commonwealth Games and Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

In a ground-breaking development, seasoned official Simon Asaah has been appointed to officiate at both the World Aquatics Swimming Championships and the World Aquatics Masters Championships — making him the first Ghanaian to earn a double appointment at the sport’s premier global events.

His double appointment marks a significant milestone in the development of Ghana’s technical officiating credentials on the world stage. Until now, Ghanaian officials such as Kwami Kpodoh, Farida Iddris, and Asaah himself had officiated at single editions of the FINA World Championships — in the UAE (2015), China (2018) and Doha (2024), respectively.
