Johnnie Walker Golf Championship charts bold new era: Ayesu, Leticia set benchmark

Philip Ayesu and Leticia Amponsah Mensah etched their names in history as inaugural champions of the Johnnie Walker Ghana Golf Championship, laying down a formidable marker for what promises to be a transformative force on the Ghanaian golfing calendar.

The two-day championship, hosted at the Achimota Golf Club, was more than just a contest of skill—it was also a declaration of intent by organisers and sponsors to position Ghana’s golf scene on par with global standards, and to make this premium event a permanent, progressive fixture on the national sporting landscape.

Backed by the iconic Johnnie Walker Blue Label whisky, the event drew over 120 golfers and a star-studded audience of business leaders, diplomats, and industry figures, underscoring a growing synergy between elite sport, lifestyle branding, and corporate engagement.

Ayesu, a dynamic entrepreneur and COO of MediaEdge Digital, delivered a commanding performance in the Men’s Category A, beating off a challenge from a strong field, including Leslie Nelson and Tahiru Ndungu, who finished in second and third positions, respectively.

On the women’s side, Leticia -- Director at Pamicor Ltd and Secretary to the Nsoromma Board of Directors -- displayed poise and perseverance to edge out Mary Prempeh and Catherine Fabbi, claiming her place as a new beacon in women’s golf.

Their victories after two days of top-level golfing represent more than individual success—they symbolise the birth of a new golfing legacy with international aspirations.

“This is not a one-off,” affirmed Estella Muzito, Marketing and Innovations Director at Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC.

“The Johnnie Walker Ghana Golf Championship is here to stay—an annual celebration of progress, precision, and premium experiences, benchmarked on the global pedigree of Johnnie Walker tournaments worldwide.”

In the Men’s Category B, Lloyd Kusi stood tall with a fine performance, edging out Samuel Koranteng and Dean du Toit. Golf veterans Mike Aggrey and Mona Myers-Lamptey dominated the Seniors’ Division, bringing seasoned elegance to the tournament.

Emerging talents, golfing finesse

The event also spotlighted emerging talent, with Anthony Mensah Dzamefe and Princess Nkansah-Boadu crowned Most Promising Players – two names to watch as the sport gains momentum.

Godwin Asamannaba, Bariatu Bah, Joshua Mensah-Larkai, and Kous Louanges Mang were also honoured for Longest Drive, and Nearest to the Pin contests.

The championship’s corporate and social appeal was unmistakable, climaxing with a glittering awards night where trophies were presented by Felix Addo, Board Chairman of Guinness Ghana, and Estella Muzito, to rapturous applause.

The Managing Director of Guinness Ghana, Felicite Nson, described the championship as a symbol of progress and ambition.

“As we celebrate 65 years of Guinness Ghana, this championship is part of our legacy and future—uniting bold thinkers, achievers, and the spirit of excellence. It reflects our global vision brought to life here in Ghana.”

The two-day festivities got off to a curated Blue Label tasting experience, setting the tone for a vibrant weekend that also featured the signature Mirror Ball party—a stylish blend of sport, sophistication, and celebration.

For Dr Frank Adu Jnr, President of Achimota Golf Club, the tournament’s success sets a new standard for Ghanaian golf.

“This is a game changer. It’s elevated expectations and has drawn a new wave of interest. We are proud to be the home of this championship and look forward to nurturing its growth in the years ahead.”
