TAMASCO old students refurbish basketball court
SOME old students of the Tamale Senior High School (TAMASCO) have rehabilitated the school’s basketball court to modern standards in honour of an American Peace Corps volunteer, John Naple, who introduced the game in the school in 1971.
Present at the event to hand over the refurbished court to the school in Tamale, were a former Vice-Chancellor of the UPSA and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the GCB Bank Ltd., Prof. Joshua Alabi; a former Director-General of the GBC, Major Albert Don-Chebe (retd); a former Deputy Registrar of the UPSA, Daniel Bukari (Danbuk); a retired High Court Judge, Justice Jacob Boon, and a former Registrar of the UPSA, Dr Seidu Mustapha, among others.

An inter-house boys and girls basketball competition was held as part of the dedication ceremony with Bawumia House beating Gbadamosi House 15-14 in the Girls' division, while Hayfron House beat Gbewaa House 21-17 to win the boys’ competition.
Pattinson House was adjudged the Best Behaved House, while Sham-Una Mohammed Fareed of Tamakloe House was declared the Most Promising Player in the tournament.
Glorious days
Major Don-Chebe (retd), who was the guest of honour and the first captain of the TAMASCO Basketball Team, recalled the glorious days of the team and said they dominated the game in northern Ghana at the time, including competing and winning against international opposition from neighbouring Burkina Faso.
He commended the old basketball players who sacrificed their time and resources to rehabilitate and refurbish the court.
Major Don-Chebe also expressed gratitude to Messrs Danbuk and Alex Kukula for planning and coordinating the refurbishment and activities successfully.
He thanked Prof. Abdallah Ali Nakyea, a Senior Lecturer, University of Ghana, for donating four sets of jerseys and four basketballs to the school.
Major Don-Chebe exhorted the current basketball players to strive for excellence both in the classroom and on the court, adding, “By so doing, you will continue to raise the proud flag of TAMASCO”.
