Joshua Clottey wants Bukom fans to change

Joshua ‘The Hitter’ Clottey, a former International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion, has expressed concern about the unruly nature of boxing fans in the Bukom enclave.

According to Clottey, the indiscipline nature of the fans was negatively impacting the growth and development of the sport in the country.

Clottey was reacting to the unruly behaviour of some boxing fans which led to an abrupt end of the National Individual Championship in Accra on July 14.

The supporters, who disagreed with the verdict of a bout, caused commotion at the Accra Stadium, compelling the organisers to end the event unceremoniously.

“This has been a long-standing problem within Bukom and its environs whenever fans come in their numbers to support their boxers and it must stop.

“How can the sport grow under such circumstances when people come to watch a bout and it ends this way?” Clottey bemoaned.

“I am very upset and I think that attitude must stop if we really want our boxing to come back to normal because there are several ways of voicing out our grievances,” said Clottey.

The Bukom enclave located in Accra has a rich boxing history, having produced many talented boxers over the years. However, Clottey believed that the behaviour of some boxing fans in the area was detrimental to the sport's progress.

According to Clottey, such actions could create a negative image for boxing, discourage potential investors, and also deter young talents from pursuing boxing as a career.

Clottey's statement highlights the importance of fostering a positive and respectful atmosphere within the boxing community.

It is essential for the boxing authorities, coaches and the community at large to work together to address the issue and promote a culture of respect and discipline in Bukom and beyond.

By doing so, they can ensure the growth and success of boxing in Ghana and continue to produce talented boxers who can compete on the international stage.
