Juneteenth Boxing Tournament set to blend sport, culture and social justice in Accra

The Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra will host a sporting and cultural spectacle on Saturday, June 21, 2025, as Ghana welcomes the first-ever Juneteenth Boxing Tournament, an event designed to honour freedom, promote equality, and energise the fight against social injustice.

Organised by Bishop Boxing Promotion and sanctioned by the Ghana Boxing Authority, the tournament will see elite boxers from Ghana and the United States square off in a night of high-octane competition. But beyond the action in the ring, the event carries a deeper message—one rooted in the global commemoration of Juneteenth, the day that marks the end of slavery in the United States.

“This is more than just a boxing event,” said Dave Bishop, founder of Bishop Boxing Promotion. “The Juneteenth Boxing Tournament isn’t just about sports—it’s a celebration of freedom, equality, and the ongoing pursuit of justice. As a proud Ghanaian citizen, I’m committed to giving back to the motherland and contributing to its development.”

The philanthropic event will feature six high-stakes bouts across multiple weight divisions, showcasing some of the finest talent from both sides of the Atlantic. However, the day’s programme extends beyond the squared circle.

A two-kilometre community run will set the tone for a day of festivities, followed by cultural performances, live music, a special reception, and an after-party.

The tournament’s proceeds will support the refurbishment of the Wisdom Boxing Gym, a well-known hub for young boxing talents in Accra.

The goal is to transform it into a state-of-the-art facility to help nurture the next generation of Ghanaian boxing champions.
