Karate: GKA to announce national squad wed

Ghanaian Karatekas face a nervous wait to see if they will be included in the national karate-do team after participating in last Saturday's national "Justify Your Inclusion" championship held at the Hathiramani Hall of the Accra Sports Stadium.

The 12th edition of the championship drew about 100 karatekas from clubs registered with the Ghana Karate-Do Association (GKS) who were all hopeful of winning their various weight categories and impressing the national team selectors.

According to the national Technical Director of the GKA, the fate of the hopefuls would be decided on Wednesday when his outfit releases the list of national team members.

Karatekas to impress was John Ansah who defeated Muniru Salifu to win the +84 kilogramme (kg) weight category while Ernest Agooji placed third in the same category.

Emmanuel Agyei clinched the -75 kg category with a win over Edmund Amoako while Patrick Amkye and Kingsford Dabo placed third and fourt respectively.

The -67kg category was won by Bright Tetteh who came tops against Felix Donkor while Richard Bangya beat Godson Odungare to third place while the -60kg was won by Dickson Acolatse who upstaged Peter Tokperttey while Richard Grayham and Emmanuel Dosou finished third and fourth respectively.

The +84kg category was won by Felix Annang while the ladies exhibition duel saw Umuh Issifu defeat Louisa Ogundare.

The president of the GKA, Melvin Brown, said he was impressed with the standard of karate on display, assuring that the karatekas could win medals at the African Karate-Do Championship slated for April in Gabon.

He explained that the mode of selection for the national team would see the top three in each weight category invited for camping when the list is released.
