Marcel Desailly statue to be unveiled

Retired Ghanaian footballer and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Marcel Desailly will this Friday be honoured by UK-based company Images & Likeness with a bronze statue at the Lizzy Sports Complex in Accra.

The huge bronze sculpture in the image of the former French captain, Desailly, will be unveiled in honor of the legend at a ceremony which will witness several presentations on both aspects of his life as a footballer and an international ambassador.

According to the organisers, Image and Likeness, the statue is in recognition of Desailly’s outstanding performances as a footballer and the impact he has had on the lives of children in his numerous roles as an ambassador.

Dr Gerry Waldron, the sculptor of the statue, explained that, “The decision to honour the Ghanaian-born French star is to reflect on his personality and uniqueness, celebrate the difference in him and what he has achieved, his contribution to his community and country”.

Desailly was a member of the charismatic French team which won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the 2000 European Championship. Following those triumphs, he led France to victory in the Confederations Cup held in South Korea and Japan in 2001; a feat he repeated two years later in France.

He is the owner of the Marcel Desailly Investment Limited and the Lizzy Sports Complex which houses a training centre and a football academy for talented footballers.
