No nationality switch for Amponsah

Athlete Janet Amponsah says the idea of a nationality switch is not her priority, at least, for now.

The Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) has been in the news recently following the switch of nationality by long jumper Ignatius Gaisah to The Netherlands, and Amponsah is hoping for an end to such a practice.

The 20-year old told GNA Sports, “yes, it has crossed my mind but I am not considering that now”.

Amponsah bears her former colleague no grudge. Gaisah cited financial support and motivation among other factors as what necessitated his switch and Amponsah wants authorities to give an improved attention to athletics as football enjoys.

“I was sad to hear of Gaisah’s decision because he is very good, but he had a valid reason as athletes are neglected or given attention not comparable to footballers. So he must be allowed to pursue his dream.”

Though Gaisah represented The Netherlands at the championship, Amponsah received a visit from the the long jumper silver medalist while in Moscow.

“He (Gaisah) came over and spoke to me. He also encouraged me to do better and I was humbled by his gesture.”

Despite crushing out in the first round, she is still revelling in the opportunity to compete at the highest level in athletics.

“I have gained experience and am also enjoying progress in my base in Mauritius. Now, I know what it takes to win a laurel at a major championship and plan to intensify my training and hope to  get the opportunity to compete in at least four meets each year to improve on my time.”

Amponsah has challenged herself to a time below 22sec before the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
