Qualifiers for PGA Gold Fields Championship begins Sept 14

The Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of Ghana has announced the schedule for qualifiers of its annual Gold Fields PGA Championship, which begins on September 14 at the Celebrity Golf Course.

Dubbed the "Road to Damang 2020 Gold Fields PGA Championship", the qualifiers will be used to select a total of 32 golfers, comprising 24 regular golfers and eight senior golfers who will take part in the main championship which will take place at Damang in the Western Region between November 25-28, 2020.

According to Mr Ahmed Padori, the Director of Operations for PGA, the qualifiers became necessary because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said the Coronavirus safety precautions will be strictly adhered to during the qualifiers and the Championship to ensure the safety of all participants.

"Because our members are scattered we will play the qualifiers at five courses... This is the last qualifying rounds to make up the required numbers for the final tournament," Mr Padori said.

Giving a breakdown of the qualifiers, the Tournament Director, Mr Akwasi Prempeh said the Achimota Golf club will have 10 golfers qualifying from 19 players, whilst Tema and Celebrity Clubs will occupy nine slots out of a qualifying field of 18 golfers..

He added that the Ashanti and Western Regions will produce five (5) golfers each to the main Championship from ten and eight qualifying golfers respectively.

"Before the championship, the qualifiers will tee off on September 14 at Celebrity Golf Course. The second qualifier will be for the Tema Club on 15th September while Achimota Club host theirs on 16th and 17th September. The qualifier in Kumasi begins on 18th and 19th September, 2020, with Western Region been the last," Mr Prempeh said.
