Refund part of ex-gratia award - Lepowura appeals to ExCo members

The Lepowura of Kpembe in the Northern Region, Alhaji Mahamadu Nurudeen Jawula, has added his voice to the call by some football pundits to make the outgone members of the Ghana Football Association Executive Committee to refund part of the $15,000 they took home as ex-gratia in November this year.

According to Alhaji Jawula, currently chairman of the FA’s Club Licensing Committee, although he had nothing against the payment of the ex-gratia, the quantum was offensive as it exceeded the approved figure by congress four years ago.

He said the figure approved was $2,604 for each member and, therefore, asked that the receipients  should be made to refund some.

In an exclusive interview with the Graphic Sports last weekend, Alhaji Jawula explained that every worker deserved remuneration at the end of their service, which comes in the form of ex-gratia or end of service benefits for both public and private servants, but when the payment turned out to be outrageous the personalities involved must be made to refund part of the amount.

“Our presidents and parliamentarians, as well as all public servants take home ex-gratia so the payment to the former Exco members was right but it was way too much and they must refund part of the money”, Alhaji Jawula stressed.

According to the former MTN FA Cup Committee chairman, the money given to the members could be used to develop the sport in the country, instead of depending on FIFA most of the time for development projects.

Meanwhile, he had cautioned the GFA to take a second look at its communication unit which, he said, had been weak for some time now.

According to Alhaji Jawula, the current communications director of the FA had not been on top of issues lately, a phenomenon which he said was detrimental to the reputation of the association.

“I don’t see a better replacement for Ibrahim Saani Daara, but I think that of late he has toned down a bit and he needs to rise up to the occasion and communicate effectively”, the Kpembe Lepowura said.
