Resilient Heart of Lions hold Asante Kotoko
Asante Kotoko’s hopes of securing their first home victory over Kpando Heart of Lions in two seasons ended in frustration as they were held to a goalless draw at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi yesterday.
It was Kotoko’s first match at their traditional home ground this season, following months of renovation work, and the Porcupine Warriors were eager to celebrate their return with a win.
However, Coach Bashir Hayford’s well-drilled Lions side once again proved their mettle, displaying the tactical discipline and defensive organisation that have made them the surprise pacesetters in the ongoing Ghana Premier League campaign.
The result ensured they remain unbeaten after four matches.
The game produced few clear-cut chances, though Kotoko striker, Albert Amoah, came closest to breaking the deadlock. His spectacular bicycle kick in the 26th minute rattled the crossbar, drawing gasps from the home crowd.
While Lions enjoyed more possession, Kotoko appeared to be the more enterprising side in attack, registering six goal attempts compared to Lions’ four.
Wasteful
Still, their profligacy in front of goal left head coach Abdul Karim Zito, who was celebrating his birthday yesterday, disappointed with the outcome.
Kotoko will next face Bibiani GoldStars in one of their outstanding fixtures before crucial meetings with Hearts of Oak and Basake Holy Stars, as they build momentum for their upcoming CAF Confederation Cup clash with Wydad Casablanca.
Lions remain top of the league table, one point ahead of Medeama SC and will next host Berekum Chelsea at the Kpando Stadium.
