Mr Abbey Pobee — Believes there is a duplication of roles in the FA’s communication unit.

Scrap FA’s Communications Dept — Pobee

A Kumasi-based sports administrator, Jonathan Abbey Pobee, has stirred controversy as he questions the Ghana Football Association (GFA) why it still maintains a Communication Department and a GFA Media Committee at the same time.

According to Mr Pobee, the 13-member media committee established by the FA a few weeks ago has competent members who can efficiently perform the role, hence the need to scrap the communications department headed by a Deupty General Srecretary in Charge of Communications, Ibrahim Sannie Daara.

He is even at a loss why the head of the FA’s communications wing is not even a member of thenwely formed media committee to ensure a more co-ordinated work.

“The media committee has Mr Albert Commey as chairman with Graphic Sports Editor, Felix Abayateye, as his vice. Other members are Wilfred Kwaku Osei, Kurt Okraku, Sometimer Otuo Acheampong, Dickson Kwabena Kyere, Fred Acheampong, Kuntu Blankson, Kofi Owusu Aduonum, Kwame Oware, Rockson Yeboah, Jeff Asare and Michael Oti Adjei.

“There is no need for the GFA to continue engaging the services of an official spokesperson [who heads the Communications Department]. Engaging him at the time the FA has established the media committee is a waste of our financial resources.

“This is because almost all members of the media committee have the capacity to perform the same function without any cost to the FA and the nation,” the founder of defunct Neoplan FC explained in a telephone interview with the Graphic Sports.

Explaining further, he said the former FA spokesperson, Randy Abbey performed effectively and efficiently without any cost to the nation.

However in reaction, GFA vice-president,George Afriyie, maintained that the current spokesperson for the FA was a permanent member of the association whose role was not restricted to just playing the role of a spokesperson for the association but managing its entire communications activities.

The media committee, on the other hand, is to play an advisory role for the communications department.

“Mr Saani Daara is a permanent staff of the GFA, so his activities as the spokesperson does not add any cost to our operations,” he explained.
