
Speaker Bagbin hails Mahama, sponsors as Democracy Cup unites nation
The Parliament of Ghana, under the leadership of the Rt. Hon. Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has hailed the successful organisation of the second edition of the Democracy Cup.
The match, held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Friday, September 5, 2025, saw Accra Hearts of Oak FC emerge victorious over their city rivals, Accra Great Olympics.
In a statement released by the Parliamentary Service, the Speaker extended his "heartfelt gratitude" to a wide array of stakeholders for their roles in the event.
He specifically thanked President John Dramani Mahama, "for his gracious presence and continued support of national unity, democratic principles, youth development, and civic engagement through sports."
The Rt. Hon. Speaker also expressed gratitude to the Acting Chief Justice, His Lordship Baffoe-Bonnie, the Electoral Commission, the National Commission for Civic Education, the Military, and the Ghana Police Service for "joining in this national endeavour and underscoring the importance of fair play and inclusion."
Further appreciation was extended to the Ga-Mantse, Regional and Traditional Leaders, Ministers, and Members of Parliament for their "encouragement and solidarity."
Special acknowledgement was given to the title sponsor, KGL Group Limited, and all other sponsors, "whose generosity and commitment to promoting sport, unity, and democratic values made the event possible."
The two participating clubs, Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics, were also recognised for their part in the spectacle.
The Parliament of Ghana extended its "sincere commendation to the general public, fans, volunteers, security personnel, and students who attended the event in large numbers and participated with remarkable enthusiasm."
The statement concluded by noting that their "orderly conduct and vibrant support greatly contributed to the success of the occasion."
