Supporters unions must come together - Minister

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has tasked the various supporters unions in the country to consider amalgamating into a single entity to make them more effective.

He also advised them to desist from focusing mainly on the Black Stars to the neglect of other sporting events.

“As a minister, I’m uncomfortable with the number of supporters unions in the country,” he stated.

Mr Vanderpuye made the call when celebrated supporters group, the Die-Hard Supporters Union, paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Accra last Friday.

He challenged the various supporters groupings to unite in order to attract corporate sponsorship.

He, however, lauded the union for not restricting its support to the Black Stars and urged them to continue in that regard.

He underscored the importance of supporting a national sports team, saying it boosts the morale of players and motivates them to do better.

The president of the group, Abraham Nkansah, alias “Apiurugu Chakapama”, later presented some plaques and trophies won by the group to the Minister.

The awards included CAF’s Orange Supporters of the Match in 2013, SWAG Special Meritorious Award, Ghana Fans Award and Ghana Excellence Award.

He said the union would continue to offer its widow’s mite to all national teams and clubs in the country.

He appealed to the Minister to help galvanise support and sponsorship for the group to enable it to continue with its campaign.
