Table Tennis: Borteye clinches U-19 girls title at Otumfuo Smash II in Kumasi
Ghanaian table tennis star Joanita Borteye delivered an impressive performance to claim the Under-19 girls’ title at the Otumfuo Smash II Table Tennis Tournament, held in Kumasi.
Borteye dominated the final match against Emmanuella Yaa Kyere, securing a 3–0 win to emerge champion in the category.
The tournament, which took place at the Ahinsan Youth Centre, attracted over 180 players from across the country, competing in three main categories — Hopes (U-12), Youth (U-19), and Seniors.
Borteye’s commanding performance in the youth division reaffirmed her status as one of Ghana’s promising young talents in the sport. Her ability to control rallies and maintain consistency throughout the final proved decisive against Kyere.
Aside her triumph in the Youth division, Borteye also made a strong run in the Senior Women’s category, where she reached the semi-finals before losing narrowly 2-3 to eventual champion Augustina Baidoo.
The tournament saw several thrilling encounters across the various categories, with James Marfo claiming the men’s senior title while Augustina Baidoo emerged champion in the women’s senior division.
Organised by the Ghana Table Tennis Association, the Otumfuo Smash tournament continues to provide a platform for both emerging and experienced players to showcase their talent while promoting the growth of table tennis in the country.
For Borteye, the victory represents another important milestone in her rising career as she continues to establish herself as one of the country’s exciting young prospects in the sport.
