Tetteh wins WBO africa heavyweight title

Heavyweight boxer Ebenezer Tetteh last Saturday night became the new World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Africa Junior heavyweight champion after knocking out his opponent Burkinabe Boniface Kabore in the second round of their title bout staged at the Unity Park at Achimota in Accra.

The win sustains the winning streak of the Ghanaian who is undefeated in 15 bouts and has set his eyes on winning a world title next year.

Both boxers appeared to lack the finesse and conditioning for such a weight class fight as punches were thrown recklessly like amateurs.

Tetteh, 27, unleashed ferocious combinations in the first round to unsettle his opponent who responded in equal measure with left and right hooks.

The burly boxer, who hails from Avenor in Accra and cheered on by fans from his neighbourhood, dropped his opponent twice with powerful right hooks.

But the Burkinabe veteran, 35, who has lost four times in his 24 professional fights, beat the counts on those two occasions.

However in the second round, Kabore, sporting a Mohawk haircut, failed to respond to the count after being dropped by two vicious combinations as he lay supine on the canvas before struggling to life himself up.

Referee Adore Bertin from Benin stopped the bout before elated supporters of the Ghanaian stormed the ring in jubilation.

Bout supervisor Samir Captan and sponsor, Dr Ato Lindsay, decorated the Ghanaian with the belt.

Also on the night, veteran Michael ‘Ayittey Powers’ Okine stopped Eric Kwadey in the second round of their cruiserweight encounter.

Powers, 37, fighting at the Unity Park after two years’ absence, unleashed a powerful right hook which dazed Kwadey to the canvas.

In a featherweight contest, Ezekiel Annan won a unanimous points decision over John Oblitey Commey.
