Why Aliou Cissé resigned as Libya Head Coach
Senegalese Aliou Cissé has resigned as head coach of the Libya national football team, describing his time in charge as an “incredibly enriching” experience.
The former Senegal national football team manager announced his decision on Wednesday via his official Instagram account, shortly after leading Libya in a friendly match against Liberia national football team.
In his farewell message, Cissé expressed gratitude to his players, staff, and Libyan supporters, highlighting the progress made despite challenges. He said he was proud of the team’s work and remains confident in its future growth.
“To the staff and players, despite the difficulties we faced, I am proud of the work we accomplished together and the results we achieved. I have great faith in this team, and I have no doubt that you will continue your efforts to help it grow."
“Libyan supporters, I would like to thank you for the warm welcome you gave me, your passion, and your support. I will not forget you. I know that our knights will always be able to count on you. I wish you all the very best for the future,” he said.
Cissé was appointed Libya’s head coach in March 2025 on a two-year contract. During his tenure, he managed 10 matches, recording three wins, five draws, and two defeats.
Despite adapting well to the culture, his time was marred by financial difficulties, particularly delays in salary payments. Although part of the arrears was reportedly settled at the end of March, the ongoing issues are believed to have played a key role in his decision to step down.
