Women’s Premier League: Ampem Darkoa, Police Ladies set up grand finale
Ampem Darkoa Ladies have cemented their dominance in Ghanaian women’s football by winning the Northern Zone of the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League for the fourth consecutive season — teeing up a titanic final clash against newly crowned Southern champions, Police Ladies.
The Techiman-based side wrapped up the zonal title with a game to spare on Matchday 17, maintaining a three-point gap at the summit.
Though they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Fosu Royal Ladies on the final day, the damage had already been done by their nearest challengers, Dreamz Ladies, who faltered with a 2-1 loss to relegation-threatened Supreme Ladies.
Ampem Darkoa, affectionately known as the ‘Nanamma’, ended the campaign with 12 victories, one draw and five defeats, finishing top with 37 points.
Their form sets up a blockbuster final against Police Ladies, who dethroned serial winners Hasaacas Ladies in dramatic fashion to emerge Southern Zone champions for the first time in the club’s history.
Police end Hasaacas' dominance
Police Ladies capped off a remarkable season with a 2-0 victory over FC Epiphany Warriors at the Adjiriganor Astro Turf on the final day. It was a fitting end to an 18-match unbeaten run that saw them defy the odds and shatter the longstanding duopoly of Hasaacas.
Heading into the final day, both Police and Hasaacas were locked on 36 points, separated only by goal difference. But while Police held their nerve, Hasaacas slipped up at home, drawing 1-1 with mid-table Jonina Ladies – a result that saw the title slip through their fingers.
Police Ladies finished with 11 wins, six draws and just one defeat – topping the table with 39 points and earning a well-deserved spot in the national final against Ampem Darkoa.
That final – the crowning moment of the season – is set for next month at a yet-to-be-announced venue and date, and promises to be a mouthwatering contest between Ghana’s two form teams.
Relegation blues
While the top teams prepare for glory, the curtain has come down on others’ topflight dreams. In the Northern Zone, Sung Shinning Ladies and Supreme Ladies have been relegated after enduring torrid campaigns. Wa-based Sung Shinning, who joined the elite ranks only last season, finished bottom of the table with a mere eight points from 18 games.
Supreme Ladies, despite their dramatic final-day win over Dreamz Ladies, could not escape the drop either. Their fate was sealed by earlier poor results, meaning they join Sung Shinning in the lower division next season.
In the Southern Zone, Berry Ladies have suffered the same fate. The Madina-based outfit endured a dismal season, collecting just seven points from 18 games while shipping 36 goals – the worst defensive record in the division.
The final relegation spot in the South remains unresolved, with Halifax Queens and Faith Ladies set for a tense playoff. Both clubs are locked on 13 points, having drawn both of their head-to-head clashes this season, and now face a winner-takes-all showdown for survival.
