Young goalie eyes Black Starlets call-up

At just 15 years old, Awudu Iddrisu is already making waves in the Greater Accra Regional Football Association (GARFA) Division Two League, turning out as a first-choice goalkeeper for Doxa-H United FC. Despite his youth, the teenage sensation is brimming with confidence and harbours dreams of donning the Black Starlets jersey.

Iddrisu joined Doxa-H United this season from Gaz Nobles FC, another third-tier side based in Agona Swedru in the Central Region. His rise has been nothing short of remarkable.

A regular starter in the ongoing GARFA Zone 4 2024/25 campaign, Iddrisu has dazzled fans with his exceptional reflexes, and commanding presence between the posts.

His performances have not gone unnoticed. Doxa-H supporters have been effusive in their praise for the young shot-stopper, whose heroics have often been the difference between defeat and victory.

Opposing fans have also taken note, with Iddrisu’s name frequently on their lips even at away fixtures.

With Iddrisu guarding the goal, Doxa-H United have lost just three of their 10 league games this season and currently sit ninth on the 16-team table.

However, the Sefwi Akontonbra native is determined to deliver more clean sheets to help his Anyaa Sowutuom-based side climb higher in the standings.

Beyond the league, Iddrisu dreams of reaching the pinnacle of Ghanaian football and beyond. While his ultimate ambition is to represent the Black Stars and one day play for a top European club, he believes he is already prepared for a call-up to the national U-17 team, the Black Starlets.

Speaking about his progress, Iddrisu expressed gratitude for the challenges that have tested him in the fiercely competitive GARFA league.

"I'm so excited to be playing in such a tough and competitive league. There are so many good teams with very talented players.

It hasn’t been easy—it’s been a tough test—but I’m enjoying every bit of it because it’s helping me improve every day," he said.

The young goalkeeper’s ambition is clear: "My dream is to one day play for one of the big clubs in Europe and represent the Black Stars. But for now, I’m focused on my club and working hard every day to get better. I think I am ready for the national under-16 or under-17 teams. If I’m called up, it will be great, and I’ll grab the opportunity with both hands because I want to make my country proud."

With his talent and determination, Iddrisu is one to watch as he continues to shine in the GARFA Division Two League, edging ever closer to his dream of representing Ghana on the international stage.
