The annual celebration, dubbed, i-Week, was aimed at promoting ICT innovation in Ghana and the ECOWAS sub-region through a combination of seminars, interactive presentations, case studies, hands-on training, as well as the exhibition of innovative products.

The theme for this year was  “Driving Innovation: New Communities, New Opportunities, New Markets” and focused on the need to drive innovation using an inclusive approach to marketing creativity.

The Product Development Manager of GCNet, Mr Carl Sackey, addressing participants in one of the workshops, apprised the participants of how GCNet promoted the local ICT sector through the procurement of services such as network links through ISPs, mast manufacturing, developing some of its minor applications, and hardware and ICT logistics supplies.

He also indicated that GCNet had provided support to ICT institutions, including the provision of computer hardware to some of the public universities, internships for ICT students, as well as facility tours and giving advice to other organisations that plan to undertake ICT investments, such as the development of data centres akin to what GCNet has deployed.

Mr Sackey also touched on the issue of innovation and encouraged young ICT entrepreneurs to understand the dynamics of the ICT market, their target clientele and endeavour to provide timely services.

For her part, the Director-General of the AITI, Ms Dorothy Gordon, encouraged young IT professionals to take advantage of the opportunities presented by GCNet and other ICT organisations, as well as some of the applications that had been showcased to develop their own businesses and not rely solely on employment opportunities within the public sector.
