MPS directed to cease charging upfront before unstuffing containers

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has directed the Meridian Port Services (MPS) Limited to cease charging upfront before unstuffing cargo containers at the Terminal Three of the Tema Port.

The authority observed that consignees of such containers should make payment to MPS or any other terminal operator only after the physical examination was conducted.

This will ensure that the charges are based on services actually rendered at the Intrusive Inspection Platform.

This is part of four major directives announced by the Director-General of GPHA, Mr Michael Luguge in a letter dated December 4 and copied to MPS and all key stakeholders in the maritime industry.

The directive followed a two-day meeting between trade associations and stakeholders, made up of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF), Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA), Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) and GPHA which ended on Wednesday, December 4.

It was also after a front-page publication in the November 28, 2019 edition of the Daily Graphic newspaper which indicated that MPS was charging upfront fees on unstuffing cargo container.
