GT Bank introduces online cheque deposit system

Guaranty Trust Bank (Ghana) Limited has introduced a system that enables customers to deposit cheques into their account remotely from their offices without visiting any of the bank’s branches.

This service applies to both GTBank cheques and other cheques from other banks.

A release from the bank said “This new product, known as the “GTRemote Cheque Capturing”, operates on a dedicated and secure on-line platform. It is an easy three-step process of scanning, verifying, and depositing cheques remotely from their own premises anywhere in the country”.

Explaining the processes, the release said “the process begins with a confirmation of the customer’s identity as a valid customer who has been profiled on the system before scanning of cheque is allowed”.

According to the release an image quality is checked online and the scanned cheque securely transferred to GTBank.

“After this process has been successfully completed, a receipt  which is similar to a cheque deposit slip is thereafter generated. The bank then submits the cheque to the Ghana Inter-bank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPPS) for the necessary clearing process. Cheques drawn on GTBank are processed internally as expected”, it added.

It said the GTRemote Cheque Capturing, the first to be introduced in the country, was suitable for corporate customers and financial institutions.

The release said it also reduced the time required by customers to physically deposit cheques at the bank and simultaneously facilitate savings by eliminating the cost of going to the bank, photocopying cheques and having a dedicated employee specifically for depositing cheques in banks.

Other benefits of the system, the release said were that it provided customers with greater convenience of when to deposit cheques; protects and encrypts information; makes balancing fast and easy; provides quick cheque image retrieval and reduces paper handling errors in the comfort of a customer’s office.

It quoted the Managing Director of Guaranty Trust Bank (Ghana) Limited, Mr Lekan Sanusi, as saying that “Hitherto, customers who process bulk cheques have to go through the time-consuming procedure of photocopying all signed cheques and visit a branch to deposit them individually for clearing. The beauty of this system is that it provides further convenience to customers who otherwise would have to go through lengthy procedures”.

The Bank’s Group Head of Technology, Mr Leopold Armah, stated that, “All that customers require is a scanner and access to reliable internet services. It is a user-friendly system that is intended to assure customers of a safe and secure means of depositing their cheques from the comfort of their offices through our robust IT platform”.
