Interbank ATMs record over 1000 transactions per week
Other connected banks are Zenith Bank, United Bank for Africa, Agriculture Development Bank, Unibank, Access Bank, UT Bank, and HFC Bank.
The rest are Prudential Bank, Bank of Africa and Guaranty Trust Bank. The remaining banks are at various stages of completion and their customers will also begin to enjoy the service shortly.
A summary of transactions on the interbank ATMs released by GhIPSS showed that contrary to perceptions that the smaller banks will benefit from the wider ATM outlets of the bigger banks, customers of some big banks are rather using more of the ATMs of the smaller banks.
The report, which covers transactions from the end of August till date indicated the most used ATM for interbank transaction was Zenith bank.
Over 2,770 transactions took place on Zenith Bank ATMs, while customers of Zenith Bank who used the ATMs of other banks amounted to only four transactions.
On the contrary, Ghana Commercial Bank, which has one of the most extensive ATM outlets, had 939 transactions by their customers on the ATMs of other banks while 450 transactions were carried out on its ATMs by customers of other banks.
The Agriculture Development Bank also had 591 transactions on its ATM by non-customers, while its customers undertook 1,115 transactions on the ATMs of other banks.
Commenting on the report covering the first 15 weeks of the Interbank ATM Switching Transactions, the Chief Executive of GhIPSS said, the patronage of ATMs depended more on their reliability and location rather than the number of outlets.
He therefore said the perception that the smaller banks would only parasite on the extensive network of the bigger banks is not supported by the available data.
According to him, the strategic location of the ATM rather could be the main factor.
Mr Hesse explained that since there was some charges when a bank’s ATM was used by non-customers, while the customer on the other hand was enjoying convenience, the service represented a win-win situation.
He explained that although the target was ambitious it would be achieved if all ATMs were actively being used for interbank transactions.
He, therefore, urged customers of banks with local ATM cards not to go roaming in search of their banks’ ATM but to use any ATM outlet of the 15 banks currently connected to the gh-link platform. GB
