Jospong, Komptech train waste managers in Western and Western North Regions

The Jospong Group of Companies, in partnership with its international collaborator Komptech GmbH, has conducted specialised training in Integrated Solid Waste Management, Circular Economy, Composting, Thermal Waste Recovery (Refuse-Derived Fuel), Landfill Management and Emissions Treatment for waste management professionals in the Western and Western North regions.

The programme forms part of a nationwide capacity-building initiative under the "Jospong-Komptech Waste Academy," designed to strengthen expertise in Ghana’s waste management sector.

In his opening remarks, the Project Manager of the Academy, Mr Jacob Kwaku Ladi, who also serves as the Group Head of Learning and Development at Jospong Group, said the training was developed through collaboration with Komptech GmbH, the Austrian Development Agency, the Technical University of Vienna and ICEP, a social impact NGO in Austria. He noted that the initiative is targeted at individuals working directly within environmental and sanitation services, spanning both the public and private sectors.

The Head of Jospong Academy, Brigadier General (Rtd) Mike Akpatsu, explained that since its launch in Accra last year, the Academy has trained professionals across different levels of the industry, including executives and managers. He added that the current phase of the training is led by Jospong professionals who received extensive training in Ghana and Austria, equipping them to deliver similar programmes nationwide.

Trainers at the session included Mr James Deku, who led courses on Integrated Solid Waste Management, Circular Economy, Landfill Management and Emissions Treatment; Mr Isaac Awuah, who taught Composting and ISWM processes; Ing. Israel Achaempong, who handled Thermal Energy Recovery; and Mr Michael Ashaigbor, who discussed the links between waste management and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Participants described the training as an “eye-opener” that would help transform waste management in their respective communities.

A District Manager of the Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly, Ms Patience Baah Anyanful, expressed her appreciation for the opportunity, saying: “The training was very educative and covered all the key elements of my waste management activities in the district. I look forward to applying the knowledge to improve waste management in the communities I serve.”
