QM: Tell me about your TBSC journey with KNUST

In 2020, I stumbled upon a link shared on our class page with the caption “Let’s support Team KNUST”.  I was very curious since I hadn’t heard of any quiz competition for business students, so I decided to follow it and that is when I discovered the Tertiary Business Sense Challenge.

Little did I know that would be the genesis of my TBSC journey. I closely followed the competition the following year, only to see KNUST defeated by UCC, who had dominated since the quiz's inception.

In the subsequent year, I decided to try out for the TBSC Version 4.0 competition and after progressing through all the stages, I earned a spot as one of the final representatives for KNUST.

There was immense pressure—not only had we never won the coveted trophy, but this time we had to compete with only two contestants on stage due to a change in the quiz's format for that year.

By God’s grace, we emerged as the Zonal champions for the Northern Zone, and that gave us a confidence boost that we could make it at the Nationals. Gradually, we inched closer to the finals by fencing off with very formidable schools across the country.

In the finals, I fell slightly ill and feared I might let the team down with a poor performance. However, with the support and encouragement of my team, I managed to persevere.

Together with Vivian and Eric, KNUST ultimately emerged as winners for the first time, and all I can say is that it was truly an exhilarating and unforgettable experience.

QM: How was the feeling like on winning the competition in 2021?

Winning the trophy was an incredible feeling. It represented the payoff for months of extensive hard work and intense preparation, particularly for me, because I had to manage the stress of my final year studies with the TBSC competition.

But in honesty, the true highlight was seeing the joy and pride on the faces of my coaches, the past contestants, and the supporters after the announcement.

Their excitement made the victory even more meaningful. Sharing that moment with KNUST was more than just a win; it was a testament to our perseverance and our unwavering belief in our capacity as individuals to achieve anything we set our minds towards.

QM: What were some of the challenges faced, lessons learnt, and key takeaways from the TBSC platform?

For me, the main challenge was dealing with meeting the expectations of everyone who had hope in me, the self-doubt, and also the pressure to continually improve on my past performances. I eventually realized that success is a gradual process, requiring commitment and consistent effort, after all, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

I believe my key takeaways from the competition would be that: I gained a renewed belief in myself, learned the importance of time management, and understood the value of trusting God no matter the circumstances.

QM: What were some of the key takeaways from the TBSC platform?

Being involved in TBSC has significantly enhanced my conscientiousness and forward-thinking abilities. It has inspired me to cultivate a habit of asking more questions daily, which I believe is essential for navigating a successful life.

QM: What do you currently do and how has the TBSC shaped you afterward (Impact of TBSC, if any)?

I am pursuing a Master of Science degree (MSc) in Finance at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

QM: What advise do you have for schools and students who may want to participate in the TBSC?

TBSC is a great platform to test yourself. It challenges what you know and helps you build a network.

QM: Any final comments for Version 6.0 schools?

I think schools should encourage their students to participate. It raises awareness for the schools and provides networking opportunities for the lecturers as well.

Overall, TBSC is a great platform to be part of, and I am excited to have been part of this journey.

To all schools and contestants participating, make the most of this opportunity to compete, make new friends, and enjoy the thrill of the competition. It is a fun and exciting experience that will leave a lasting impression.

I have high hopes that version 6.0 will be an even hotter competition and I will be following keenly as the academic ‘vawulence’ unfolds.

As for any school that wants to win this year’s trophy, don’t forget that Team KNUST is coming. I know my school will once again be back stronger for the win in Version 6.0.
