The Executive Vice President of Radio France International (RFI), Madam Cecile Megie, has praised the high standard of media practice in Ghana in relation to other African countries.

She observed that Ghana had a relatively free and liberal media landscape that allowed for the dissemination of information, public discussions, and balance in presenting issues.

“The environment in which the media practises in Ghana is very much like what we have in France. There is room for free expression and media personnel here have quite a good environment in terms of the regulations as compared to other parts of the continent”, she said.

She made this observation at a press conference in Accra yesterday under the auspices of RFI and France 24 to create awareness of their new enhanced programming in the country.

For his part, the Director of France 24, Mr Marc Saikali, said the assertion that the foreign media always reported on issues in Africa in the negative light was not applicable to the twin channels in Ghana.

“The fact that we have local correspondents to report on local issues means that local content is paramount. Our correspondents report on issues ranging from politics, economics, social, sports to entertainment’”, he said.

As part of the awareness creation, he said there would be a special interview with President John Mahama on the goals and policy directions he had for the country and other global issues.

The local correspondent in Accra, Citi fm-based Nana Boakye Yiadom, gave great testimony about the originality of and relevance of the news reports they file.

RFI English Programming and France 24 are two international French radio and television channels which broadcast in English language in the country with focus on local content.  RFI has two subsidiaries based in Accra and Kumasi with the frequencies 89.5 and 82.5 respectively.
