Republic Bank breaks ground on clean water projects across three regions
Republic Bank Ghana has broken ground on the construction of mechanised boreholes in three regions, launching a major clean water intervention aimed at improving public health, education and sanitation in underserved communities.
The sod turning ceremonies were held in the Dingoni Community in the Tolon District of the Northern Region, Pwalugu in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region, and Taviefe in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region. The projects form part of the Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme and align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 on Clean Water and Sanitation under its Power to Make a Difference initiative.
The events brought together traditional leaders, government officials, community representatives and officials of Republic Bank, reflecting a partnership approach to tackling persistent water challenges across the country.
In Dingoni, the Chief of Woribogu, Woribogu Lana Abukari, expressed gratitude to the Bank, describing the intervention as a genuine show of care for the community. He commended Republic Bank for prioritising the welfare of residents and offered prayers for continued blessings on the institution.
At Pwalugu, the District Chief Executive for Talensi, John Millim Nabwomya, praised the quality and depth of the borehole project, describing it as an example of impactful corporate social responsibility. He said access to clean water remained one of the most pressing challenges in the area and noted that the project would improve health and sanitation outcomes while reducing waterborne diseases.
The Chief of Atampure Bulika in the Talensi District, Naba Ko Gbira Maatisike, thanked the Bank for undertaking what he described as a life changing project for the people. He appealed to the Bank to ensure adequate drilling depth to guarantee a sustainable water supply, citing past interventions that failed due to technical shortcomings.
In Taviefe, the Member of Parliament for Ho Central, Edem Kofi Kpotosu, highlighted the educational impact of the project, noting that access to water would reduce the time students spend walking long distances in search of water, which often affects learning. He encouraged students to take their studies seriously and urged school authorities to maintain the facility to serve future generations.
The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, described the project as timely and deeply impactful, especially given water scarcity challenges in parts of the region. He recalled that the water situation at Taviefe Senior High School had troubled him during an earlier visit and expressed appreciation that Republic Bank had stepped in with what he called a bold and compassionate intervention. He stressed that access to clean water is fundamental to human dignity and development.
The Chief of the Taviefe Community, Togbe Tenku Kojo Ziga III, assured stakeholders that the community would take ownership of the borehole and ensure its proper use. The Ho Central Municipal Chief Executive, Stephen Adom, also commended the collaboration between the private sector and government in addressing development needs.
Each of the mechanised boreholes is designed with both electric and solar powered pumping systems to ensure reliability, representing a long term investment in health, education and economic resilience.
Delivering the keynote address at the ceremonies, Managing Director of Republic Bank Ghana, Dr Benjamin Dzoboku, said the initiative went beyond infrastructure.
“Today, we move from promise to action. Breaking ground simultaneously in three communities is a powerful statement of our ‘Bank with a Heart’ philosophy. We are not merely drilling boreholes; we are investing in health, dignity, education, and the future prosperity of Ghanaians. This project exemplifies the true Power to Make a Difference,” he stated.
Dr Dzoboku added that the projects align with the Bank’s sustainability agenda and global best practices, noting that Republic Bank Ghana continues to support national development through responsible banking.
The water projects are part of the Bank’s 2025 CSR programme and reflect its alignment with global sustainability frameworks through its parent company, Republic Financial Holdings Limited. Drilling and construction work are expected to commence immediately, with completion scheduled for the coming months.
