Rewire all buildings 50 years old - Electrical engineer

An electrical engineer, Mr Appiagyei Kwame Torto, has advised the government to issue a fiat for the rewiring of all public and private buildings which are 50 years or above.

Engineer Torto, who is also a resource person with the Tropical Cable and Conductors Limited, challenged the government to absorb about 50 per cent of the cost in order to reduce the risk associated with faulty wiring of buildings in the country.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic on the sidelines of a sensitisation seminar organised by TCCL in Accra, Mr Torto said it was crucial for the state to ensure that all facilities were well wired by certified personnel with quality cables that could stand the test of time.

“I will urge the government to give a directive for the rewiring of all public and domestic premises that have lasted for about 50 years, but the government must at least bear 50 per cent of the cost,” he said.

He cited countries such as the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA) which recently ordered the rewiring of every building, which cost they defrayed by half.

According to him, the government defraying about 50 per cent of the cost would help reduce the waste of electricity power through faulty cables in the country.

“If all houses are well wired with quality cables that could stand the test of time, the state will be able to save the amount of money it invests in boosting the power sector in Ghana,” he added.

Sensitisation seminar

The indigenous manufacturer of electrical cables and conductors, Tropical Cable & Conductor Limited (TCCL), organised the one-day seminar to educate stakeholders on various best practices in wiring and cable selection to help curtail the electricity-related hazards in the country.

The campaign also covered inspection and testing of electrical works which enabled clients and contractors to be certain that service rendered to them is of good quality.

The Marketing and Business Development Manager of TCCL, Nana Kwame Oteng-Gyasi, said the seminar was part of the company’s strategy to sensitise the public to the proper use of electrical cables and the dangers associated with using inferior ones.

About 300 participants, including representatives from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Energy Commission, and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), attended the seminar.
