This initiative aims to create a healthier learning environment and foster a culture of environmental awareness among students and teachers.

In a release issued by the bank, it said the Environmental Sustainability Project is designed to transform eight public schools within the Accra Metropolitan area by planting seedlings that will provide shade for outdoor learning and improve air quality.

It said the project also includes educational components to teach students and teachers about sustainable environmental practices.

“The first phase of this initiative was inaugurated with a collaborative event involving 40 staff members from Standard Chartered and over 120 students from three schools who came together to plant trees.

Commitment

This project aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Quality Education, Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Climate Action, Life on Land, and Partnerships for the Goals,” it said.

According to the release, the initiative forms part of the bank’s commitment to address climate change and promote environmental sustainability.

The bank emphasized the active participation of its employees through its volunteer programme, underscoring its dedication to creating a safe and sustainable environment.

The Executive Director of United Way Ghana, Faustina Abbey, said "with support from Standard Chartered, we aim to plant 200 seedlings in eight public schools by the end of 2024.

We will also establish environmental clubs in these schools to provide 2,000 young learners with resources and training on waste management, including segregation, recycling, and upcycling.”

She explained that the initiative fosters a culture of environmental sustainability, helping students understand their role in maintaining a green environment.

“The project’s second phase is set to launch in Korley Klottey, further expanding its reach and impact.

Through such initiatives, Standard Chartered Bank Ghana PLC continues to demonstrate its commitment to corporate social responsibility and its role in fostering a sustainable future for the next generation,” the release added.
