Trade Minster appeals to Nestle to source sugar from Komenda 

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has advised the management of Nestle Ghana Limited to partner the yet-to-be commissioned Komenda Sugar Factory to source sugar directly from the factory in order to boost the local industry.

He said since Nestle Ghana used sugar in many of its products, it could look at ways of partnering with the factory to obtain the quality of sugar that Nestle required.

Dr Spio-Garbrah made the suggestion when he paid a working visit to Nestle Ghana’s factory in Tema. 

He said the sugar factory which had been completed but was yet to be commissioned, had the capacity to produce 1,250 tonnes of white sugar daily and added that with support from multi-national factories like Nestle, the factory could operate at full capacity.

Policies

Dr Spio-Garbrah said the trade ministry was initiating policies to promote trade and businesses in the country and called on the manufacturing sector to take advantage of such polices.

He named some of them as the national export strategy, which focused on the non-traditional exports sector and the national export development programme, which aimed at enhancing the quality of export products and ensuring compliance with global market requirements.

Appeal

Dr Spio-Garbrah appealed to Nestle’s management to use the made-in-Ghana logo on their products to help market the country to the international community where Nestle Ghana exports some of its products, since as a multi-national company, it produced to international specifications.

The Managing Director of Nestle Ghana, Mrs Freda Duplan said the company had more than 1,300 employees, most of whom were Ghanaians.

With a daily production capacity of 250 tonnes, the company, she added, sourced most of its raw materials which included maize, rice and millet locally.

Mrs Duplan also said to help boost the capacity of farmers who produced for the company, over 52,000 farmers had been trained to produce quality cereals.

Nestle Ghana produces Milo, Cerelac, Ideal Milk and Carnation Milk, and a host of other products. It has been operating in the country for over five decades.
