Honourable Members, let cool heads prevail

The Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), one of the key organisations that has helped in guarding the nation’s democratic process over the years, has expressed concern over the ongoing constitutional and political tension following the declaration of vacant parliamentary seats by the Speaker of Parliament and the subsequent ruling by the Supreme Court.

In a press statement issued after closely monitoring events since October 15, 2024, CDD-Ghana has urged all stakeholders to exercise restraint and prioritise peace, as the nation approaches the 2024 general election.

The warning against the escalating parliamentary tension serves as a timely reminder for our leaders to place premium on constructive dialogue and the national interest.

Parliament, because of its place in the governance architecture, is known for disagreements and tensions. While healthy debate is essential, the current level of discord is unsettling.

If left unchecked, these tensions could have far-reaching consequences. The country’s hard-won economic progress could be jeopardised, impacting businesses, jobs and livelihoods.

The foundations of our democracy could be eroded, undermining public trust and confidence. Furthermore, our country’s reputation on the global stage could suffer and that could affect diplomatic relations and foreign investment.

This would not only harm the economy but also undermine the country’s image as a beacon of democracy in West Africa.

To mitigate these risks, our leaders must engage in constructive dialogue and bring representatives from both sides together to address the issues behind the tension.

This dialogue must be guided by a commitment to respect democratic institutions, protect their independence and place the country’s interests above party affiliations and self-aggrandisement.

Our leaders should strive to understand the perspectives of their opponents and seek common ground.

Encouraging public engagement and input on critical issues would also foster a sense of ownership among citizens and promote a culture of inclusiveness
Effective leadership is critical in navigating these challenging times, and our leaders in Parliament must accommodate opposing views and seek a common ground.

Most importantly, they must have the nation’s long-term interests at heart and think beyond the next election cycle. This requires vision, courage and a commitment to place Ghana above all other considerations.

Citizens also have a critical role to play. We must demand accountability from our leaders, encourage constructive dialogue and respect public discourse.

By engaging in informed discussions, we can promote a culture of tolerance and understanding. We must also recognise the importance of compromise and pragmatism in democratic governance.

The upcoming elections present an opportunity for our nation to reaffirm its commitment to democratic principles and consolidate its gains.

The Electoral Commission's reputation for professionalism and independence is crucial in maintaining public trust and confidence.

Ghana’s democratic institutions have been tested in recent years but the country’s ability to navigate challenges has been impressive. The peaceful transfer of power in 2017 and the acceptance of electoral outcomes demonstrate the country's commitment to democratic values.

However, the current tensions highlight the need for constructive dialogue.

The economic stakes are high, with Ghana facing significant challenges in the wake of global economic uncertainty.  It is crucial that leaders prioritise economic stability and growth.

Civil society organisations have played a vital role in promoting democratic governance in Ghana. These organisations must continue to advocate transparency, accountability and inclusivity in the electoral process.

The media also have a critical role to play in promoting fact-based reporting and discouraging polarising rhetoric.

The success of the elections will depend on the collective efforts of all stakeholders. The international community will be watching closely, and the country has the opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to democratic values.

Ultimately, finding common ground requires a willingness to listen, learn and adapt. By working together, we can overcome current challenges and build a brighter future for Ghana.

Our leaders must rise to the occasion.
