The local theme for this year's commemoration, "UN at 79: Working together towards peace and sustainable development in Ghana for present and future generations," resonates deeply with Ghana's commitment to the UN's mission. Ghana, a member of the UN since March 8, 1957, has demonstrated leadership and dedication to the organisation's principles.
The theme was coined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration from the 79th United Nations General Assembly, held on “Unity and diversity for advancing peace, sustainable development and human dignity, everywhere and for all” and the focus on the 2024 General Assembly “Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations”.
The global theme reflects the current global challenges facing the organisation in the area of peace, security and the urgent need to accelerate global action towards the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In the light of that, the theme highlights the need for countries to forge bonds of peace and cooperation through the use of diplomacy and dialogue to resolve conflicts.
Our nation's role at the UN has been significant, particularly during its 2022-2023 term on the Security Council, where it focused on enhancing global peace and security for sustainable and inclusive development in Africa.
Consistently, Ghanaian have assumed key positions within the UN system, driving meaningful impact and progress.
