Either the water level in Bui, Akosombo and Kpong Dams are below the minimum operating levels, compelling the Volta River Authority (VRA)  to regulate their operations or the thermal plants are faulty, or there is no fuel to power the thermal plants.

For more than a decade, Ghana has always experienced load-shedding exercises, and the last one which began in 2011 has continued up to today.

Two euphemisms, ‘dum-sor dum-sor’ and ‘adum-adum-dum’, have been adopted by Ghanaians to mean blackouts, power outages or load-shedding.

The challenges posed by the persistent load-shedding are enormous and require immediate action.

It is good that the government has plans to fix the unpalatable situation by 2016, and perhaps have energy reserves that could be exported.
