Yesterday, the basic education system of our country reached a much-awaited milestone which saw some candidates who did not do well in some subjects in the 2014 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) rewriting those subjects.

The BECE system was a product of the educational reform that came into being during the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) administration in 1987 and which was aimed at translating the Dzobo Committee’s recommendations of 1974 into practical reality.

Since then, the country has enjoyed relatively stable basic education regime that has not suffered any political altercation till now.

The idea that informed that policy shift sought to equip graduates from the junior high schools (JHSs) with hands-on vocational skills that could make them capable of working to earn decent livelihoods, even in the event that they chose not to further their education or fell short of qualifying for the next level.
