Self-regulation will enhance media freedom

In 1992, Ghanaians began operating a new national constitution, which had the media occupying a powerful position.

The framers of the Constitution, aware of the importance of the media in a democratic society, ensured that the freedom and independence of the media were guaranteed.

For instance, Article 162 (2) of the Constitution says that, "Subject to this Constitution and any other law not inconsistent with this Constitution, there shall be no censorship in Ghana."

Clause 3 of the same Article says, "There shall be no impediments to the establishment of private press or media; and in particular, there shall be no law requiring any person to obtain a licence as a prerequisite to the establishment or operation of a newspaper, journal or other media for mass communication or information."

Since then, Ghana has witnessed a major widening of the media landscape with many newspapers, radio and television stations coming into the fray.
