We need victory over Germany

The finest day for Ghana to avenge the defeat it suffered at the hands of Germany in South Africa 2010 is here. Now is the hour.

The Black Stars face off with Germany in Fortaleza in one of the Group G matches at the ongoing Brazil 2014. This is a must-win game for Ghana, if the Blacks Stars are to be in contention for the next stage of the World Cup.

We are happy that Coach Kwasi Appiah and his charges are not taking their encounter with the Germans lying low, being very aware of the painful defeat they suffered at the hands of the German ‘machine’ at the 2010 Mundial.

All kinds of permutations have started already with regard to what Ghana should do to qualify beyond the group stage. That kind of attitude tends to make us a second-rate team but the Black Stars are a formidable team ready to make a mark in Brazil.

Football, we know, has no guide since there are surprises in tournaments such as the World Cup. Already, some of the shocks have unfolded before millions of soccer fans watching the World Cup.

Our President has said elsewhere in this edition that “Today, anything is possible for the Black Stars”. Ghana can make history today if they focus on the ball in order to achieve the ultimate, which is/are the goal(s).

We concede that the road to this objective will be tortuous and rough but with hard work and the determination to die for Ghana, Coach Kwesi Appiah and his charges will achieve the ultimate goal.

Despite a few ugly noises from certain quarters for their own selfish reasons, majority of Ghanaians are behind the Black Stars, who are expected  to upset the Germans this evening. But they need our massive support.

Footballers are inspired to give their best when the fans cheer them on during the game and although we know that in terms of support base, the Germans will outnumber Ghanaians, the few hundred supporters will use gospel and ‘Jama’ songs to keep the German goal area boiling with action throughout the 90 minutes.

The mood back home will not tolerate a loss to the Germans as a win will revive the spirit of the nation in these trying times.

While a few unpatriotic elements wish the downfall of the Stars, majority of the people have been extending goodwill messages through the social media platform, radio, newspapers and telephone calls to the footballers.

Although Ghana is a secular state, majority of the people profess God or a Supreme Being whom they believe controls everything on earth.

We are told man proposes but God disposes, which means that the predictions of the pundits are not cast in iron and stone.

Those predictions are just wishful thinking. What is important is for our players to play well, stick to the rules of the game, respect the directions of their coach and they will emerge victorious over the Germans.

The Daily Graphic also calls on the people to invoke the powers of any supreme being that they worship to guide the Stars in this crucial game so that with God on our side and the hard work of the players, Ghana will prevail over the Germans.

A win over the Germans is not negotiable. It must be victory at all cost, but through fair means.
