Immigration, Customs to investigate Kulungugu border officers row

Recently, a video went viral on social media showing some officers of the two institutions engaged in a scuffle at Kulungugu.

The incident, which the two institutions have admitted to be an embarrassment, led to a meeting between their respective heads last week to discuss how they could better coordinate at the various borders.

A statement jointly signed by Assistant Commissioner of Immigration and Head of Public Affairs of the GIS, Michael Amoako-Atta, and a Deputy Commissioner in charge of Communication & Public Affairs of the GRA, Florence Asante, said following the meeting, the two bodies had come up with measures to ensure that their officials worked in closer collaboration to complement each other’s role.

They said following the meeting, the Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Mr Kwame Asuah Takyi, and the Commissioner of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Brigadier General Zibrim Bawah Ayorrogo, have agreed that an investigation should be conducted into the particular incident and come out with measures to forestall such occurrences in the future.

Also, the Officers in Charge of both Immigration and Customs at the Kulungugu Border Post have been directed to work under the auspices of the Border Security Committee (BOSEC) to resolve any immediate issues, while awaiting the report of the Joint Investigative Committee.

“The Comptroller-General and the Commissioner of Customs wish to assure the general public that the GIS and GRA-CD, together with other border agencies, will continue to work collaboratively in the interest of national security and development, and the public will be duly informed on the findings of the investigations.

“The two institutions regret the inconveniences that the incident caused and will ensure that such situations that hinder the free passage of persons and trade facilitation do not recur,” the statement assured.
