EDITOR’S LENS: United! Creatives should stand

GHANA’S creative industry continues to grow, with artistes achieving remarkable success both locally and internationally. However, instead of celebrating these achievements, some stakeholders are quick to compare one artiste’s success to another’s, creating unnecessary divisions.

This issue resurfaced after Shatta Wale’s recent record-breaking concert at the Independence Square, which drew massive crowds and was hailed as one of Ghana’s biggest musical events. Some have chosen to measure it against similar events by other artistes — a practice that does little to uplift the industry.

It is, therefore, very reassuring to see artistes such as Shatta Wale taking a stand against comparisons and promoting unity among creatives.

In a recent Facebook post, Shatta Wale, who is being lauded for arguably hosting the biggest concert in Ghana, urged unity among creatives, stressing that success comes through discipline and hard work, not rivalry. His call is timely and commendable, reminding artists and fans alike that Ghana’s creative space thrives best in an atmosphere of collaboration, not competition.

One of the main challenges facing the creative sector is the culture of comparison and criticism. Instead of promoting collective growth, we often find ourselves divided by fan bases and egos. This attitude diminishes the industry’s potential and distracts from the larger goal — building a vibrant and sustainable creative economy.

As Graphic Showbiz believes, it’s time to change the narrative. The creative industry is a powerful tool for economic growth, cultural exchange, and social transformation. Shatta Wale’s message extends beyond artistes; it is also directed at media houses, bloggers, radio and TV presenters, fans and pundits. Everyone plays a part in fostering unity.

Let’s focus on uplifting one another, celebrating every milestone and using individual achievements to inspire others. Rivalry may generate short-term excitement, but collaboration creates a lasting impact.

Shatta Wale’s success story is proof that dedication and perseverance yield results. If creatives commit to their craft and support one another, Ghana’s entertainment industry will soar to greater heights.

As Shatta Wale aptly wrote, “It’s time for us to change the narratives… Time no dey.” Indeed, the time to unite and grow together is now.
