GH artistes and BET Awards

WINNING an award or even a nomination at the Black Entertainment Television Awards (BET) is such a big deal for most musicians.

The enviable annual award, since its inception in 2001, gets all the attention it needs due to the weight it carries.

All the big names in the music industry worldwide can be associated with the scheme and Ghana is proud to have won two BET awards, with Stonebwoy and Sarkodie in the category of Best International Flow and Best International Act.

Last week, Sugarcane hitmaker Camidoh lost his first BET award after missing out on the 2023 BET Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act award to Cameroon's Libianca.

In addition to the two artistes who have won awards, close to 10 GH artistes have had nominations at the BET awards and Graphic Showbiz is proud to present them here.

Kojo Antwi

Regarded as one of Ghana’s finest musicians, Kojo Antwi received a BET Awards nomination in the Best International Act category in 2010. His nomination underscored his influential status as a trailblazer in Ghanaian music.

Known for his soulful melodies and captivating performances, Antwi’s music has resonated with audiences in Ghana and beyond. He is known for songs such as Nfa Me Nko Ho, Amirika, Adiepena, Medofo Pa, Bra, among others.

Black Sherif

Black Sherif’s nomination in the BET Hip Hop Award in 2023 brought a lot of excitement as a young rising star who is receiving all the buzz for his works.

Black Sherif’s nomination demonstrated his rising prominence in the Hip-Hop genre, both locally and internationally. The Kwaku The Traveller hitmaker won Artiste of the Year at this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

Sarkodie

Michael Owusu Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie, is the first musician in Ghana to have won BET’s Best International Flow in 2019. 

In his acceptance speech, the two-time Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) Artiste of the Year said: “I just want to say thank you to the Almighty God. To my family, this one is for my lil girl Titi…. I think Africa has always had it and it is about that time…This year is the Year of Return and I will urge each and every one of you here to take a trip back home…”

R2Bees

On May 14, 2013, Hiplife duo R2Bees had a nomination in the BET Best International Act Africa category.

The Hiplife duo made up of Faisal Hakeem (Paedae) and Rashid Mugeez(Mugeez) competed with 2Face Idibia and Ice Prince, both of Nigeria; South Africa’s Toya Delazy and Donald, as well as Uganda’s Radio and Weasel.

The duo, who have been around for more than 10 years have hit songs such as Life (Wahali), Over, Makoma, Love, Fine Wine and Eboso, among others, to their credit.

D-Black

After Ghana’s Music Maestro, Kojo Antwi was nominated for the BET Awards in 2010, rapper D-Black was the next Ghanaian to follow. He was nominated in the category of Best International Act: Africa.

 Born Desmond Kwesi Blackmore, D-Black is the CEO of Black Avenue Muzik, a record label with signees including DJ Breezy and S3fa.

Camidoh

Camidoh is the latest artiste from Ghana to receive a nod at the 2023 BET Award in the Viewers’ Choice: Best New International Act category. Unfortunately, he lost to Libianca from Cameroon.

The Sugarcane hitmaker has been making waves in the music industry since his debut in 2019. His hit singles, Sugarcane, So Fine and My Number have all been certified gold in Ghana.

MzVee

Singer MzVee is the first female musician to be nominated from Ghana at the BET Awards.

She gained a nod in the Best International Act Africa category in 2016. She was also nominated in the Viewer’s Choice Best International in 2015.

MzVee, real name Vera Hamenoo-Kpeda, released her debut solo album in 2014 with several hit singles including Borkor Borkor, Natural Girl and Dancehall Queen.

MzVee, a former signee of Lynx Entertainment, was the winner of the New Artiste of the Year award at the 2015 VGMA. She is currently a solo artiste.

Kwesi Arthur

In 2018, rapper Kwesi Arthur had his first BET nomination. The talented artiste was nominated for the Viewer's Choice Best New International Act category.

Kwesi Arthur rose to fame in 2017 with the hit single Grind Day, which received widespread acclaim and a co-sign from rap heavyweights Sarkodie and Medikal.

In 2019, his second EP, Live from Nkrumah Krom Vol II, garnered more than two million streams in the first week of its release.

Stonebwoy

Dancehall artiste Stonebwoy also made Ghana proud when he won Best International Act at the BET Awards in 2015.

He won in a category which included Sarkodie, South Africa’s A.K.A and Nigeria’s Yemi Alade.

 In the same year, Stobnebwoy, who is also the CEO of Burniton Music Group, won Artiste of the Year at the VGMA.

The Hero hitmaker is married to a dentist, Dr Louisa Ansong Satekla, and they have two children.

Fuse ODG

UK-based Ghanaian act Fuse ODG, known for his fusion of Afrobeats and other genres, received a nomination in the BET Best International Act: UK category in 2015.

 With his Afro-centric sound and thought-provoking lyrics, Fuse ODG has been an innovator in promoting African music and culture to a global audience.

 Some of his songs include Antenna, Azonto, Million Pound Girl (Badder Than Bad) and Dangerous Love.
