Ghana courts cruise industry investment at Seatrade Global in Miami

Ghana is stepping up efforts to position itself as a top cruise tourism destination in West Africa, following its participation in the 2025 Seatrade Cruise Global Exhibition and Conference held in Miami, Florida.

The event, which is regarded as the world’s largest business-to-business gathering for the cruise industry, attracted cruise line executives, port authorities, tourism boards, and destination marketers from across the globe.

Representing Ghana were senior officials from the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, including Mr Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, Deputy CEO of GTA; Mr Ekow Sampson, Deputy CEO in charge of Operations; and Mr Vittus Otto Langmange, Chief Director at the Ministry. The team engaged key global stakeholders to promote Ghana’s tourism offerings and explore partnerships in the cruise sector.

Mr Aggrey described Ghana’s participation as a “significant milestone” in the country’s broader strategy to attract international cruise traffic.

“Ghana is well-positioned to be a cruise hub in West Africa. By strengthening the synergy between tourism and maritime sectors, we can offer unforgettable shore experiences to visiting cruise passengers,” he stated.
He noted that with cruise lines actively seeking to diversify their itineraries beyond traditional destinations, Ghana’s coastal ports—Tema and Sekondi-Takoradi—offered compelling alternatives supported by rich culture and historical depth.

The delegation promoted Ghana’s iconic attractions, including Cape Coast and Elmina Castles, cultural displays, artisanal villages, ecological parks, and vibrant food scenes—all easily accessible from the nation’s ports.

The GTA also called for greater collaboration between port authorities, tourism agencies, and local tour operators to enhance the cruise passenger experience. Officials stressed the need for authentic, short-stay excursions that cater to the unique expectations of cruise tourists.

“Cruise guests are looking for memorable and enriching short-stay experiences,” said Mr Aggrey. “Tour companies in Ghana must innovate to meet this demand, positioning themselves as trusted partners to international cruise lines.”
To that end, the team highlighted destination branding, digital marketing, and shore excursion development as vital pillars to boost Ghana’s visibility and appeal in the global cruise market.

As Ghana continues to invest in tourism infrastructure and service delivery, stakeholders believe the cruise segment could play a pivotal role in expanding visitor numbers and generating economic opportunities along the coast.
