Ghanaian cinema at ‘African Perspectives’ series
A film series dubbed, ‘African Perspectives’, dedicated to well-produced African films, takes off on Thursday, July 6, at the Goethe-Institut in Accra with the screening of Kwaw Ansah’s ‘Love Brewed in the African Pot.’
The focus, from July to December 2017, is on Ghanaian cinema. Consequently, one Ghanaian film will be screened on the first Thursday of each month alongside question and answer sessions with filmmakers, actors and actresses.
Other films lined up are ‘His Majesty’s Sergeant’ by Ato Yanney (August), ‘Forbidden Fruit’ by Veronica Quashie (September), ‘No Time To Die’ by King Ampaw (October), ‘Chronicles of Odumkrom – The Headmaster’, by Ernest Abbeyquaye (November) and ‘Rebecca’ by Shirley Frimpong-Manso (December).
Shot in 1980, ‘Love Brewed in The African Pot’ involves romantic love colliding with social class and colonialism when Aba Appiah, born in a privileged home, falls in love with Joe Quansah, a son of a fisherman.
Her father, Kofi Appiah, a retired civil servant, has other plans for her and seeks to block the marriage, resulting in conflicts that have complex and unexpected consequences.
A multiple award-winning filmmaker whose work as writer, director and producer includes ‘Heritage Africa’, Ansah has also produced films such as ‘Harvest at 17’, ‘Crossroads of People, Crossroads of Trade’, ‘Love of AA’, Papa Lasisi’s Bicycle’ and ‘Suffering To Lose’ and ‘Praising The Lord Plus One.’
